Pimpinella anisum
Aniseed features in the world’s earliest Materia Medica and was prized as a spice to flavour food and beverages, including pernod, absinthe and ouzo.
The aniseed scent is richer and sweeter than Fennel and not as sharp as Star Anise. This small flowering herb Aniseed is closely related to Fennel, and despite its similar scent is quite unrelated to Star Anise.
Star Anise and Fennel pure essential oils are also available.
Aroma: Top to Middle Note.
Perfume: Pungent, rich, sweet and liquorice-like.
Blends well with: Fennel, coriander, chamomile, carrot seed, cedarwood and mandarin.
Indications (based on both empirical usage and scientific research of historical and modern times): anaesthetic/analgesic, aphrodisiac, anticoagulant, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, aperient, carminative, galactogogue, decongestant, digestive, expectorant, diuretic, tonic (heart), insecticide, sedative, and parasiticide, vermifuge.
