Leo - I Create
Leo is fire made visible. It is warmth, expression and the sovereign glow of selfhood. As the fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo represents creativity, confidence, love, leadership and joy. It is ruled by the Sun and governs the heart, spine, blood circulation and vitality. After Cancer’s inner tides, Leo bursts forth with the impulse to shine. It teaches us how to give, how to lead and how to live from the centre of who we truly are.
This is an archetype of boldness and generosity. Leo is the performer and the protector, the playful child and the dignified king or queen. When balanced, Leo is inspiring and magnetic. When out of balance, it may become self-centred, prideful, overextended or emotionally dramatic. The challenge is to keep the fire bright but steady, to express without burning out and to lead without losing the heart.
The Body in Leo Territory
Leo governs the heart and spine; the physical centre of life and the structural axis of the body. The heart is both organ and symbol, the drum that sets the rhythm for the entire system and the seat of joy, courage and emotional truth. When Leo energy is disrupted, we may see issues with blood pressure, circulation, palpitations, spinal tension or emotional disconnection from purpose. There may also be inflammation, exhaustion from overdoing or imbalances linked to performance and identity.
Leo’s body needs a steady source of warmth and flow. It thrives when energy moves with rhythm and purpose. When the heart is neglected or denied joy, vitality suffers. When overworked or overstimulated, Leo’s fire may collapse inward, leading to emotional dullness, frustration or self-doubt.
Understanding the Leo Constitution
Those with strong Leo in their chart; sun, moon or rising, are often radiant, creative and proud-hearted. They bring light into the room and naturally take up space. When in balance, they are generous and steady, offering strength and warmth to others. When out of balance, they may seek approval too intensely or become prone to burnout and emotional drama.
The Leo constitution is often warm and dry. They may be prone to overexertion, inflammatory conditions, cardiovascular strain or depletion from emotional over-giving. Herbal support for Leo often focuses on regulating the heart and circulation, calming the nervous system, supporting the adrenals and rekindling joy.
Herbal Allies for Leo
Nature’s herbal range offers many bright, strengthening and heart-centred allies to support Leo’s noble fire. These herbs work to protect and vitalise the heart, regulate circulation, uplift the spirit and calm the systems that carry Leo’s emotional intensity.
If we were to choose one herb to represent Leo’s radiant centre, lemon balm would be an inspired choice. Its botanical name Melissa comes from the Greek for “honeybee”, a creature deeply connected to solar energy, pollination, joy and the sweet productivity of Nature. This herb carries the brightness of the sun with a soft and welcoming touch.
Lemon balm is gently uplifting, emotionally comforting and deeply nurturing to the nervous system. It calms Leo’s mind without dulling it and gladdens the heart without overstimulating. For those Leo’s who burn too bright and collapse into fatigue or melancholy, lemon balm offers gentle restoration. It helps regulate mood, ease emotional tension and bring the spirit back into a place of lightness. Physically, it supports digestion, gently balances hormones and reduces nervous tension, all vital for Leo types who may push themselves too hard or feel overwhelmed by the pressure to lead or perform. It even has mild circulatory benefits, helping ease stress-related blood pressure elevations or heat in the system.
Hawthorn is a classic heart-centred herb; it strengthens and regulates the heart, improves circulation and soothes the emotional heart space. It protects while promoting flow, ideal for those who give too much or feel emotionally strained. Hawthorn strengthens the heart muscle and supports overall cardiovascular function and can help reduce symptoms of heart failure and improve exercise tolerance. It is not to be used by those already on pharmaceutical heart medication or those with too low blood pressure.
Yarrow helps regulate blood flow, supports circulation and modulates inflammation, a fine herb for Leo’s often passionate, fiery constitution. Calendula, too, is ruled by the Sun and brings bright energy to the tissues. It encourages healing and radiant skin while warming and moving the lymphatic system.
Ginger possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that benefit Leo’s heart health; helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which can contribute to a healthier cardiovascular system. Cinnamon is more than just a flavourful spice favoured by Leos; it regulates blood sugar and reduces cholesterol levels that can rise due to Leo’s love of rich food.
For those Leos who burn bright and fast, nettle offers grounding nourishment. It cools the heat while replenishing mineral reserves. Rosemary, with its clarity and solar strength, is both a circulatory stimulant and a mental energiser, ideal when Leo’s fire dims. Garlic is renowned for its cardiovascular benefits. It is rich in allicin, which helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Regular consumption of garlic for Leo can improve arterial flexibility and reduce oxidative damage to blood vessels, supporting overall heart health. St John’s Wort, long associated with the Sun, may also be used when Leo’s light is blocked by melancholy or emotional pain and restores a deregulated nervous system; it helps restore brightness and rebuild the sense of inner radiance.
Aromatic Support
Leo responds well to strong yet harmonious scents; essential oils that support the heart and uplift the spirit are ideal. Grapefruit and mandarin return Leo’s childlike zest for life, while chamomile and bergamot settle the nerves that are helpful for the highly-strung Leo. Orange oil is the obvious signature oil for Leo, a bright, delicious sphere that brings exuberance and joy, personifying Leo’s sunny nature as well as assuaging gut disorders of a nervous origin. Orange and its cousin tangerine are actually vascular tonics that radiate heart energy for one who is heart-broken and wears their heart on their sleeve.
Frankincense, bergamot, orange, cardamom, neroli, clary sage, cinnamon leaf, and ylang ylang all speak to Leo’s solar centre. These oils can be used in a diffuser, added to massage blends or incorporated into rituals of self-expression and renewal. Expensive, regal oils like rose, (assigned to the heart), jasmine, neroli and helichrysum are also heart tonics. Marjoram and ylang lower blood pressure, while neroli and coriander cleanse the blood. Carrot seed is a very good blood cleansing vaso-dilator and smooth muscle relaxant and its mild, soothing and earthy aroma relieves anxiety and brings a more expansive yet realistic view of the self.
Frankincense, rosemary and ginger increase circulation and are ideal to use in massage oils for Leo’s commonly felt sore back. Black pepper picks up a languid Leo’s energy during their bouts of laziness.
Rituals and Remedies
Leo healing must involve joy. Rituals that reconnect the individual with pleasure, creativity and authentic expression are vital. Herbal teas can become ceremonies of celebration. A golden blend of calendula, lemon balm and chamomile can bring brightness to dull days.
A warm hair oil treatment, massaged into the scalp and wrapped in a towel, nourishes Leo’s crowning glory, the hair, which holds symbolic importance for this proud and radiant sign. This ritual not only beautifies the mane but also soothes the senses, inviting Leo to feel cared for and resplendent from root to tip.
Encouraging gentle movement like dance or sun-warmed stretching helps Leo release held tension. Ensuring safe time exposing the skin to the sun is essential for Leo to maintain strength and assimilating Vitamin D. Gazing at the natural red light of sunrise or sunset nourishes Leo’s ruling organ, the heart and calms the fire that often burns too brightly. This warm light synchronises the circadian rhythm, boosts mood and reminds Leo of their connection to the great cosmic rhythm of light and shadow. As the sun dips low, Leo is invited to soften their radiance, to reflect and to feel held by the same light they so freely give.
Creative rituals such as journaling, singing, drawing or making infused herbal oils from calendula or rosemary warmed by the sun can also help restore Leo’s connection to personal purpose.
Luxury loving Leo loves a scented herbal oil or magnesium salt bath, to calm the nerves and open the heart. Leo benefits greatly from warmth and light, both physical and spiritual.
Leo’s radiant energy shines brightest through joyful, uninhibited play, especially rough and tumble adventures outdoors. Engaging in spirited games with children or friends stirs their natural vitality, sparks laughter and kindles a deep sense of belonging. Nature becomes a playground where Leo’s creativity and courage roar free, fuelling joy, confidence and connection.
Protein-rich foods, bright fruits and vegetables like berries and carrots fuel Leo’s vitality. Healthy fats and antioxidants found in nuts and seeds support radiant skin and heart health.
“I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.” Hafiz
Meditation and the Flame of the Heart
Leo thrives in movement and expression, but meditation teaches the art of resting in one's own radiance. It is not about dimming the light, but about refining it, shining inward to connect with source. As a fire sign, Leo is anchored in the third chakra (Manipura), yet opens beautifully through the heart (Anahata) as well. With attention at the solar plexus and heart, and breath slow and generous, Leo softens pride into presence. Chanting RAM for will and YAM for love brings Leo into soulful leadership, a radiant power that does not perform, but simply shines.
Leo – Embodied Practice
Affirmation: I shine from within and lead with love, not performance.
Leo benefits from practices that honour the heart, spine and inner light. Camel pose (Ustrasana) and cobra (Bhujangasana) open the heart centre and encourage a courageous yet humble expression of self. These poses help restore posture and confidence while releasing stored tension from the emotional chest.
Another beautiful Ayurvedic practice for Leo is abhyanga, a self-oil massage using warm, herb-infused oils that nourish the skin, calm the nerves and rekindle the life force. For Leo, whose energy radiates from the heart and thrives on warmth and connection, abhyanga is more than skin care, it is soul care. Use sun-charged oils such as jojoba, sesame or sunflower, infused with uplifting botanicals like calendula, St John’s Wort, chamomile, or rose and begin at the crown of the head, working slowly down toward the feet. This practice restores depleted fire, soothes pride that has been wounded and softens the heart back into generous, embodied strength. When done with attention and love, it becomes a ritual of inner sovereignty, a way for Leo to return to their natural warmth, not through effort but through glow.
Bhrāmari, or bee breath, soothes Leo’s often over-stimulated nervous system and quiets mental noise while keeping the heart centre open. The soft internal humming resonates in the chest and skull, helping Leo tune inward, release emotional pressure and reconnect to their natural rhythm of radiant yet restful expression.
Skull-shining breath (Kapalabhati) enlivens Leo’s inner fire but must be balanced with heart coherence breathing - slow, rhythmic breath focused on the heart space. Practices that involve mantra, singing or chanting allow Leo to express its energy creatively and joyfully, reconnecting personal radiance with collective good.
When the Plant Comes Into Full Bloom
In Leo, the plant reaches its peak. After Aries’ impulse, Taurus’ rooting, Gemini’s branching and Cancer’s opening, Leo is the full flower, radiant, colourful, confident. It turns toward the Sun and says yes. This is when the plant is most expressive. Its essence is now visible to the world. It becomes a beacon for pollinators, a centre of attraction. Leo teaches us how to stand in our beauty without apology. Without this phase, the plant cannot attract what it needs to reproduce or share its gifts. Without Leo, there is no confident selfhood and no joyful offering of light.
Leo Within Us All
“You were born to be rich, with the wealth of the inner Self - the everlasting joy of the soul.” Paramahansa Yogananda
We each carry Leo somewhere in our chart. It is the part of us that longs to be seen, to shine and to love boldly. It is the joy of play, the dignity of self-worth and the courage to show up with heart. When we honour Leo, we remember that joy is not selfish; it is fuel for the soul. We understand that to care for the heart is not indulgence but necessity.
Herbs help us do this. They remind us to pace our fire, to protect the heart and to stay connected to the inner flame. With their guidance, we shine from within and offer that light in service of something greater.
