Amyris balsamifera
Amyris is known to be one of the oldest materials used for its aroma in perfumery with evidence dating back 4000 years.
It is known as West Indian sandalwood because it is largely produced in the West Indies but it is not a sandalwood. Its other common names are West Indian rosewood (it's not a rosewood either) and candlewood/torchwood because its high oil content and density allowed it to be ignited and used as a torch.
Today Amyris is commonly used in perfumery and incense, in sedative blends and to stimulate lucid dreaming.
Australian Sandalwood pure essential oil is also available.
Aroma: Base Note.
Perfume: Mellow. Warm, sweet and woody; balsamic with a hint of vanilla and somewhat peppery.
Also known as: West Indian sandalwood, West Indian rosewood, candlewood, torchwood.
Blends well with: Rose absolute, geranium, clary sage, ylang ylang, tangerine, cedarwood, citronella, ginger, lavender, oak moss.
Indications (based on both empirical usage and scientific research of historical and modern times): Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, antispasmodic, expectorant, hypotensive, decongestant, emollient sedative, antidepressant, aphrodisiac, insect repellent.
